This week’s snippet comes from The Arrangement, coming next month. I’m super excited about this one, as I’m dipping my toe back in the Homestead universe, albeit far from Nebraska for this standalone.

This week’s snippet comes from Home Is Where You Are. It’s an oldie, but being that I’m writing the first in a series of standalone books set in the same universe, I’ve been thinking a lot about the first book I published. Caleb and Jacob will always have a special place in my heart, so I’m very excited to write more about them, their family, as well as a whole bunch of new characters.

In today’s snippet, Caleb and Jacob talk for the first time and it ain’t pretty.

This week… a something from the penultimate Alphas’ Homestead story, featuring a grown up Tad and a soon to be heart broken Samuel. Definitely six sentences this week…if you don’t count the dialogue.

“Thaddeus’s body stiffened, then slumped forward, draping himself over Samuel. “I-I’m sorry. I-I didn’t mean to…”

Samuel wrapped his arms around him and pulled him close. “Sure you did.” He huffed out a laugh and was relieved when Thaddeus did the same.

When he pulled away, Thaddeus was smiling and sweet again. “Yeah, I did. I mean I wouldn’t actually force you. My wolf just gets a bit carried away sometimes.”

Samuel smiled but it felt as if his heart was breaking. He stepped back and picked up the pitchfork, saying sadly before pulling his bandana back up, “I’m going to miss you too.””

This week… a little something from the penultimate Alphas’ Homestead story, featuring a grown up Tad and lots of changes to our found family. A little longer than six sentences but I love this snippet too much chop it off too soon.

“You need a hand with that?” Thaddeus hated how he sounded so nervous. He realized too late that he probably looked it as well, with his hands pressed deep into his pockets and his shoulders slumped forward. It was too much to ask that his nerves might dissipate after spending the night in Samuel’s arms, but clearly that wasn’t the case.

When he had roused himself in the morning to find Samuel already awake and watching him sleep, a sense of peace had come over him, one he’d never experienced in his life. Suddenly many things made sense to him that hadn’t before. The way his fathers looked at each other sometimes, and the way their mutual affection had never wavered. That soft innocent smile that seemed so out of place on Seth’s face when he looked at Malcolm. Perhaps it had struck Thaddeus so profoundly because he had never felt an attraction to anyone else before, even in passing. But whatever the reason, he’d known in that moment it would be impossible to give up.”

This week…a sneaky cover reveal for the Christmas novella coming soon, and a snippet featuring some brotherly…encouragement.

“Oh my god,” Chase whispered. “It’s happening again. What has gotten into you two?”

Kyle didn’t smile but splayed his hands on the table as he settled into his chair. “All I’m saying is you’re home now. It was only ever baseball that was keeping you two apart and now that your life has taken a different turn—I just think it’s about time you two found a bit of happiness, is all.”

Chase had to catch his breath. “It’s been almost six years. You can’t possibly think—”

“How many people have you dated in the last six years, Chase?” Tyler asked before stuffing his mouth full of waffle.

Chase blustered, then bit out, “Some. Plenty, actually.”

Kyle shook his finger without raising his hand from the table. “Not slept with. Dated.”

There was a snort from the chair next to him and Justin gazed up at him, clutching his invisible pearls. “Are you a hoe, Uncle Chase?”

Chase scowled at him and bumped him with his shoulder. “Shut up and eat your waffle.”

Tinsel Fixes Everything

They say you never get over your first love.

After a meteoric rise to baseball stardom, Chase Meadow’s dream is cut short and he’s back home for good, helping his brothers run the family bar while he finds his feet. Plenty of things have changed since he left for college. Although one thing he recognizes right away is Joel Levine.

From setting eyes on the skinny, stammering teen their first day of high school, until reluctantly parting five years later, the two of them had been inseparable. And now, Joel is definitely someone not easily forgotten.

But as Chase settles back into home town life, he finds that under the superficial differences—the leather jacket and tattoos—Joel is still the same person he fell for when they were fifteen. While they’re both older and wiser, Chase never stopped loving Joel. And as Christmas rolls closer, Chase starts to think that maybe Joel never stopped loving him either.

They say you never get over your first love.
Some people don’t have to.

He wanted to refute it, deny everything that Lucas was saying. But he couldn’t, so he sat there like an idiot with Lucas looking at him with such a sweet, desperate expression, until Lucas made a small hurt noise and started to get up to leave.

Ryan did the only thing he could think of to stop him. He grabbed Lucas’s arm and yanked him back down into the seat. He put his hand flat on Lucas’s chest, patting gently as he tried to get his words out. “I–I’m not the person you think I am. I’m not perfect.”

“I never thought you were.”

“I don’t want to hurt you. Don’t want to let you down.” He looked up to find Lucas smiling in pity and confusion. Ryan thought that maybe he should kiss him, but instead, he said, “I’m so tired. Will you stay with me? Just to sleep. Talk this over when the sun’s up?”

“This your place?”

Cal was a little flattered that the guy thought he could afford somewhere so expensive and smiled to himself at the compliment. That and the fact his date’s voice was warm and deep and genuinely curious. Unfortunately for him, all Cal said was, “It is for the next hour. You wanna a drink?”

The guy shook his head. “No, I—No, thank you.” He’d slipped off his outer layers and was clutching them to his chest as he stood in the center of the open plan space. There was something totally adorable about it, something deliciously innocent and awkward and Cal prayed to god it wasn’t an act and that the guy wouldn’t turn out to be a serial killer.

“Caleb frowned a little and he glanced over, first at Jacob, then his father. “Yes, of course, but since when has knowing your reasoning for anything been such a secret?”
“It’s true,” Thaddeus butted in through a mouthful of bread. “Normally, you hardly shut up about what you’re doing and why.”
If looks could kill Martha imagined Thaddeus would have been eviscerated. Or at least that’s how she felt as she looked across the table at him. Although, he only shrugged and took another bite of bread, rather than falling down dead in his soup.”

“Caleb didn’t see her but suddenly Ephraim bolted forward, sprinting across the lot, his hat flying off and landing in the dust. As he did so, Martha came running down the steps, jumping down the last few and ran holding up her skirts until she collapsed into Ephraim’s arms.
Caleb smiled and had to put a hand to his chest to stop his heart from bursting out. They always did this. Didn’t matter that Ephraim was a grown man or that Martha was a fine woman, dressed in a fancy lilac satin dress with frills and flowers on her hat. Ephraim ran his hands over Martha’s arms as she touched his stubbled face, still acting like the two orphan children who were each other’s whole world.”

Today…a little late for Halloween but…

The bizarreness of the circumstances didn’t really hit Aaron until they were almost at the diner. Here he was, on the way to drink coffee with some guy he’d accosted in the street. The fact that it was Halloween didn’t help matters much. They walked together in silence, respectable distance apart, listening to the tinny jingle of mechanical skeleton laughter and occasional pumping bass from the parade of houses and stores they passed. It was late enough that the younger trick or treaters were safely tucked up in bed and only the older contingent, fueled by alcohol rather than candy, roamed the streets.
When they were almost run down by a bewildering crowd comprised of sexy nurses, unimaginative toga wearers, surprisingly convincing zombies, and what appeared to be the Easter Bunny, Aaron chanced a look over at his companion. And found himself looking straight into those gray eyes again. He could feel the flush of heat in his own cheeks as clearly as he caught the blush on the stranger next to him before they swiftly looked back down at their feet.

This week’s snippet is from Longing for Shelter. A little Jacob, Caleb and Thaddeus for your weekend ♥

Jacob watched them, an empty, aching hole opening up inside him. He was perhaps the only one who truly knew the difference between the broken, lost Alpha who had settled in this small community all those years ago—alone and isolated from everyone—, and the man that sat in front of him now—a father, a husband, the man who had built this house and built a family from nothing. Jacob’s heart ached. “I can’t believe they would treat you that way. Especially after all these years.”
Caleb smiled. He rocked Thaddeus one more time then kissed his hair and set him down on the ground. The snuffling boy waddled over to Jacob and collapsed in his lap. Caleb watched Jacob pick Thaddeus up and cradle him against his chest, saying, “You’re a good hearted soul, Jacob, so you expect everyone to be the same. You shouldn’t take it personally. I know I won’t.”

In which Ephraim and Seth have a heart-to-heart as only two teenage boys can.

“What about you? You sure talk like you’ve made someone’s bed bang the wall.”
“Not a bed.” Seth grimaced, especially when he saw Ephraim’s scandalized expression and felt the heat rising in his own cheeks. “I mean, I’ve had kisses and more than kisses, much more but—I haven’t—I mean I haven’t done—that. Other stuff. Just not…”
To his surprise, Ephraim simply nodded and said, “Good,” and added quietly, “Means you have something to offer your mate. When you find him.”
Seth nodded shyly, but then looked up, his head tilted. “What makes you think my mate would be a man?”
Ephraim laughed. “You’re not as subtle as you think, city boy.”
